Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo has said there is an "ongoing coup" by the country's institutions to keep him out of power, AFP reports.

64-year-old Arévalo was declared Monday the winner of the presidential election with 58% of the vote. However, an electoral tribunal suspended his Semilla Movement.

“A faction of corrupt politicians and officials is refusing to recognize this result and has initiated a scheme to destabilize the constitutional order and undermine democracy. These actions amount to a coup orchestrated through institutions meant to ensure justice in our nation,” Arévalo said at a press conference.
