Azerbaijan takes advantage of the fact that Russia is busy with the conflict in Ukraine, and uses it to commit "its own crimes against humanity." The New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof expressed such a view, referring to the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of the blockade of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan. According to Armenpress, the respective article is titled as follows: "Another Ethnic Cleansing Could Be Underway — and We’re Not Paying Attention."

"You probably haven’t heard of Azerbaijan’s brutality toward an ethnic Armenian enclave called Nagorno-Karabakh, but it deserves scrutiny," writes Kristof, recalling the report by the former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, that "There is an ongoing genocide against 120,000 Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

“It is critically important to label this as genocide,” Moreno Ocampo told the aforesaid columnist, emphasizing that it is also crucial that the United States and other world powers—including the UK, which has been too quiet—step up pressure on Azerbaijan.

The article published in The New York Times once again talks about the decision of the International Court of Justice, according to which Azerbaijan must lift the blockade, as well as about the dire humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

"In 2020, Azerbaijan fought a brief war in which it reclaimed most of the enclave, and it now wants to recover the rest — and, I suspect, to push out much of the ethnic Armenian population," the columnist notes.

The article notes that “the one point even countries as far apart as the United States and Russia agree on is that Azerbaijan should reopen the Lachin corridor and end the suffering.”
