Ogun Samast, the released assassin of Hrant Dink—the chief editor of Agos Armenian weekly of Istanbul, has been charged with a new crime, Anadolu Agency reported.

A Turkish prosecutor's office demanded a 7.5 to 12-year prison sentence for Samast on the charge of "committing a crime on behalf of an armed terrorist organization without being a member."

Earlier, Samast was released on parole.

On January 19, 2007, Hrant Dink, 52, was shot dead by Ogun Samast near the building where the then editorial office was located in the center of Istanbul.

Then 17-year-old Samast was arrested the next day.

Samast had confessed to the murder and was sentenced to almost 23 years in prison in 2011.

In June, Turkey's Supreme Court of Appeals upheld some acquittals while reversing the sentences of 76 defendants, mostly government officials, in Dink's murder.

The judgment issued by the Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court on March 26, 2021 included 33 acquittals and 27 guilty verdicts.

After serving a sentence of 16 years and 10 months, Ogun Samast was released from a prison in Bolu Province, Turkey recently.
