VAN. – The military unit carrying the name of a pasha who had killed Kurds, was renamed changed upon demands of population of Turkey’s city of Van city, Anadolu agency reports, quoting Turkish Deputy PM Besir Atalay.
The Deputy PM stated that citizens of Van had bad memories in connection with the name of pasha who was accused for having killed 33 Kurds. The unit was renamed after killed officer Erkan Durkan
Besides, Atalay assured that the authorities will reconsider all the names of the military units and important institutions and change them if needed.
Mustafa Muglali pasha was found guilty of killing 33 Kurds in Van. He was sentenced to death but later the sentence was changed to 20 years’ imprisonment. He died in jail in 1951.
