YEREVAN.- Iran’s nuclear program is about 10 years old and it pressurized by the international agencies without any reasons for it, Iranian FM Ali Akbar Salehi said at a press conference on Tuesday.

He recalled that once being Tehran’s representative at the IAEA he is aware of all the details of the problem. According to the Iranian diplomat, it is a political issue rather than a technical or legal one.

“If there was a technical or legal issue, we would answer,” he told journalists in Yerevan.

In this regard, he recalled that several years ago, the IAEA addressed Iran with 6 questions.

“Iran has responded to these questions, which is reflected in the relevant report but then the West found another reason and started accusing Tehran of trying to develop nuclear weapons,” Salehi stressed. However, he noted that the IAEA is the only international authority that has the right to express opinion on the nuclear program, on the other hand the IAEA has no right to intervene in non-nuclear issues. According to him, to charge with a possibility of developing nuclear weapons is an attempt to be suspected of a crime for alleged opinion.

“We are confident in our work, otherwise it would be noticeable within 10 years. Our leadership’s position is clear and reasonable: both spiritual leader and the president have repeatedly said they are not pursuing goal to develop nuclear weapons and country’s defense doctrine is an indicative of it.

If we wanted to develop nuclear weapons, we would have publicly stated this, but our understanding and experience says that nuclear weapons are not preventive for us, so IAEA’s statement aims to exert pressure on Iran,” Salehi stressed.

Referring to U.S. charges of involvement in the conspiracy to kill Saudi ambassador in Washington, Salehi described the situation as “ridiculous Hollywood scenario”.
