Tensions over the migration issue are high across Europe as far-right parties calling for tighter controls confront centrist movements in the European Parliament elections to be held in Poland on Sunday, Reuters writes.

In this case, this confrontation has an additional geopolitical aspect. Poland and the European Union accuse Belarus and Russia of trying to sow chaos from 2021 by pushing migrants across the border as part of what Warsaw calls “hybrid warfare.” Minsk and Moscow have denied the allegations.

As the agency notes, the Polish-Belarusian border is mostly crossed by people from the Middle East.

According to the Polish government, the number of incoming people has been growing recently. And Poland recently suffered a loss: a soldier patrolling the border died after sustaining wounds in a clash with migrants on May 28.

In response, the pro-European government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced plans to reintroduce a no-go zone on the border.

"Unfortunately, this border is not safe. The purpose of this zone is to ensure that no one is attacked like Polish soldiers,” Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski told Reuters.
