The Norwegian government will give defense firm Nammo 1 billion kroner ($94 million) to increase production of artillery ammunition. The announcement came as NATO heads of state gathered for an annual summit in Washington on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

"Nammo is investing in a new production line that can tenfold increase the production of state-of-the-art artillery shells for the defense sector," the Norwegian government said on Tuesday.

The statement added that Namo has pledged to maintain the new production capacity for at least 15 years. Norway and its NATO allies are seeking to increase production of weapons, ammunition and missiles, partly to supply Ukraine but also to replenish stockpiles and be able to meet new threats.

Leaders of NATO's 32 member states are gathering this week for a transatlantic security alliance summit, with the issue of how to support Ukraine in its war against Russia on the agenda.
