Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu  has dissolved the country's parliament to form an interim government following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The respective decision is noted in the press release issued by the office of the head of state.

The dissolution followed a meeting where President Shahabuddin consulted with the heads of the three armed forces, leaders from various political parties, civil society representatives, and leaders of the Students Against Discrimination movement, the press release said.

The possible date of new parliamentary elections is not yet known.

As reported earlier, mass demonstrations against the quota system for public positions have been going on in Bangladesh for several weeks, and they intensified Sunday after the Students Against Discrimination movement announced a multi-day strike against the authorities. The ensuing clashes between students and supporters of the government turned into riots, during which about 300 people died.

The government has imposed a curfew in the capital Dhaka and some other cities,

And Monday to Wednesday has been declared non-working days in Bangladesh.
