YEREVAN.- The main challenges for Armenia are  poor land, water supply problem, the quantity of industrial waste, UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia Dafina Gercheva said during the meeting with Russian-Armenian University students.

During the discussions Gercheva touched upon such topics as the Millennium Development Goals, particularly in education, environmental sustainability and global cooperation. Among the problems that exist in society today, Gercheva noted a lack of understanding of conceptual development, social inactivity of citizens.

According to her, a systematic approach to managing the entire economy, as well as certain sectors of economy, is needed. Gercheva deems in order to improve situation in Armenia changes in the way of thinking and civic position are required more than reforms.

“Our future is in the hands of young people. And I think you will run the country soon,” she said.

Several cooperation agreements with the United Nations were reached during the visit as well. Under the arrangements, the UN experts will give lectures at the University, while the students will have a chance to undergo training in the organization.
