The authorities of Armenia have come out against the Russian regime and showed Russian President Vladimir Putin his limits, proving that people in Armenia want to live the way they live in Europe. This was stated by Michael Roth, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Bundestag—the German parliament, during a press conference in Yerevan Thursday.

Roth explained that the aforesaid refers particularly to the desire to make independent decisions and develop democracy. According to him, after the rupture of relations with Russia, the European Union (EU) intends to support its partners, including Armenia, in their efforts for rapprochement with the EU.

"We in Germany are in favor of strengthening relations with Armenia. Amid the Russian war against Ukraine, the dominant approach in the EU is that it is indispensable to expand the opportunities for Eastern European countries, including Armenia," added the German MP.

He said Russian imperialism and colonialism are a danger for the EU and Germany.

"In Europe, we are faced with Russian propaganda and disinformation. One of those manifestations is the theory that as if the EU is forcing this or that country to get closer to Europe and oppose Russia. This is nothing but cheap propaganda. I would like Armenia to get closer to Europe, but this is Yerevan's sovereign decision," Roth emphasized.

He pointed to the good dynamics of the development of relations between Armenia and the EU, including, as he explained, thanks to the courage of the Armenian authorities.

Also, the German lawmaker expressed hope that the liberalization of the visa regime between Armenia and the EU will soon become a reality. But at the same time, Roth added that this is a complex process and now it is a transition period in the case of Armenia.
