The Swiss parliament has recognized the Holodomor—also known as the Ukrainian Famine—of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide, announced the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

In a respective statement adopted, the lower house of the Swiss Federal Assembly (parliament), the National Council, recognizes as genocide the systematic mass and targeted killing by starvation with the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

"This is truly a historic decision. And this is an extremely important step toward restoring historical justice and preserving the memory of millions of innocent victims," added Stefanchuk. The statement was approved by 123 votes in favor, 58 were against, and 7 Swiss MPs abstained from voting, reports the website of the Swiss legislature.

According to the text of this statement, four million Ukrainians, nearly two million Kazakhs, and hundreds of thousands of Russians died during the Ukrainian Famine of 1932 and 1933.
