Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto summoned German Ambassador Julia Gross on Thursday to complain about a speech in which she called on Hungarian public figures to speak out against actions she said undermined the confidence of Budapest's NATO and EU allies, Reuters reported.

“Hungary is on a path that takes it away from its friends,” Ambassador Gross told an audience of diplomats, non-governmental organizations and Hungarian officials during an unusually critical speech on the occasion of German Unity Day on Wednesday.

Ambassador Gross said some actions had undermined Hungary's credibility, including what Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called a “peace mission” in Ukraine that included talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July without the support of other EU member states.

She also criticized the government's “antics in connection with the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO,” referring to Hungary's delaying the ratification process of both countries' applications.

In turn, Hungary's foreign minister called the German ambassador's comments “unacceptable.”

“The German ambassador in Budapest has seriously interfered in Hungary's internal affairs with her speech yesterday, which infringes on Hungary's sovereignty,” Szijjártó wrote on his Facebook page.
