Syria intends to join BRICS and has already sent an application to join, the country's ambassador to Russia, Bashar Jaafari, told TASS.

“We are very interested in joining BRICS. We have sent written requests to join the organization,” he said on the margins of the forum ”North Caucasus: New Geostrategic Opportunities.”

BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia became full members of the group. This year, the Russian Federation is chairing the association. The main event will be the BRICS summit in Kazan on October 22-24.
