Fifty-one people have died due to floods caused by torrential rains in the Spanish province of Valencia, the joint operative-coordinating center informed, El Pais reports.

Heavy rains flooded the eastern and southern regions of Spain Tuesday evening. The respective videos show how the water washes away the cars and bridges, and the streets are flooded with water.

In Valencia city, dozens of people spent the night on the roofs of trucks, shops and gas stations, as well as in their cars. Many have been rescued, some are still waiting for help, but emergency services cannot reach them due to the state of the roads and infrastructure.

The authorities have deployed the military. Air communication has been disrupted, also. Some flights to Valencia were canceled or diverted to other regions.

Railway link has been completely stopped in the province, and some roads are closed or blocked by cars. According to meteorologists, 491 millimeters of rain fell in Valencia in eight hours, which is equal to the annual norm.
