Police in a southern Mexican region plagued by drug cartel violence found 11 bodies, including two minors, dumped on a highway, the Associated Press reported, citing the Guerrero state prosecutor's office.

Prosecutors did not specify the ages of the two dead minors, but said two of the 11 bodies were female. The highway where they were found is also the main highway between Mexico City and the resort of Acapulco.

The bodies were discovered Wednesday night local time after police received information about an abandoned pickup truck on a main highway in the city of Chilpancingo, the state capital.

The city of 300,000 people has become the scene of brutal drug gang violence as two rival cartels fight for control of the area.
