Heavy snowfall on Tuesday left thousands of homes in Bosnia and Herzegovina without electricity, roads blocked, traffic disrupted and access to some towns and villages completely blocked, Reuters reported.

Authorities banned heavy-duty vehicles from major roads and urged citizens to avoid traveling, warning that fallen trees and vehicles without proper winter equipment were a danger. Snowdrifts were as high as 2 meters in some areas.

Bosnia's two energy companies reported that more than 170,000 households, mostly in the northern and western parts of the Balkan country, were without electricity due to downed power lines, affecting heating and water supply.

Railroad services were halted and schools and kindergartens were closed in many areas due to inaccessible roads and power outages.

The northwestern town of Drvar was completely cut off from the outside world on Tuesday, according to the chairwoman of the town's municipal council, Jasna Pechanac. Dozens of cars were stuck in the snow for hours on Monday night and travelers were rescued in the early hours of Tuesday.
