Sixteen school districts in Los Angeles County were closed Thursday due to five devastating wildfires, according to the Department of Education, CNN reported.

The closures will affect the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the country and the largest school district in California.

“A combination of factors - wind, fire and smoke - have created dangerous, complex situations that create unsafe conditions for our school communities,” the DOE said in a statement.

It is also noted that the district is considering whether classes on Friday, Jan. 10, will be remote. Of the 16 school districts closed Thursday, four have already announced they will also be closed Friday: the Burbank Unified School District, Glendale Unified School District, La Cañada Unified School District and Pasadena Unified School District. Los Angeles County is home to 80 public school districts that serve 1.3 million elementary and high school students.
