At least nine people were killed by landslides in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, and one person is missing, according to the national fire service, reports CNN Brasil.

A state of emergency has been declared in Minas Gerais for 180 days.

On Sunday night, heavy rains fell in the region, and ensuing landslides caused great damage to Ipatinga municipality with a population of more than 220,000. All the casualties were residents of Ipatinga, and 150 people were left homeless due to the devastation.

Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema plans to visit Ipatinga Monday to assess the extent of the damage and the amount of aid needed.

In the spring of 2024, Brazil was hit hard by torrential rains and floods that killed more than 180 people in the southern part of the country. The region had suffered great material losses, too.
