An explosion has occurred at a plant belonging to the German defense company Rheinmetall in the Spanish region of Murcia, the emergency services informed, reports EFE.

The emergency occurred on the premises of the Rheinmetall Expal Munitions enterprise, which specializes in the production of ammunition and explosives.

Six workers were injured in the incident. Five of them were taken to hospital, one was treated on the spot.

The fire caused by the explosion covered an area of about 2,000 square meters, informs Heraldo. The fire has been extinguished.

The explosion is believed to have occurred in one of the powder warehouses of Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, El Pais reports. The causes of the incident are being investigated.

Rheinmetall Group is the largest arms manufacturer in Germany and one of the leading suppliers of defense products in Europe. It supplies important ammunition and military equipment to the armed forces of Germany, NATO countries, and Ukraine.
