The position of the European Union (EU) on the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline has not changed and it does not meet interests of the EU, European Commission (EC) spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said at a briefing in Brussels—and commenting on media reports about the negotiations on this natural gas pipeline project.

"Our view is very, very clear. Nord Stream 2 is not the project of common interest. It does not diversify the EU’s energy sources," Itkonen said.

If the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline is restored and put into service, it should operate within the framework of European legislation, she said.

The position is that "it has to operate in line with international and European relevant legislation," the EC spokesperson added.
