A summit of European leaders was held in London Sunday, with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at the end of this summit that “Europe has woken up,” the BBC reports. According to him, the participants were united on the issues of helping Ukraine, the need for closer transatlantic cooperation, and strengthening the eastern borders of Europe.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the only thing that they really cannot afford is a peace in Ukraine that does not remain. They must be very careful in assessing what is being proposed, especially in answering the key question of whether it is possible to break this peace, because they have seen it before, the Italian PM said.

Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that they are “transatlantic allies” within NATO, and this is still the “key for security” in the US, Canada, and Europe. According to Scholz, the alliance has been strengthened in recent years “with new members and increasing defence spending,” and that this is the “path we will continue to follow in the future as well.”

And Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof stressed that Europe has to “to play a bigger role in safeguarding the security” of the continent, and added that “Close transatlantic relations are also essential.”
