The European Union (EU) and NATO are a vital operating environment for Slovakia, and this integration of structures has laid the foundations for peace and prosperity in Europe and in the country. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated this in his address at the Yerevan Dialogue 2025 international forum in the Armenian capital on Monday.

Thanks to membership in the EU, Slovakia has experienced political, social and economic development, and has reached a level of quality that would have been impossible to imagine otherwise. Support, deep cooperation with the EU and integration in economic sectors that can contribute to the growth of the well-being of people.

However, this does not mean that one cannot be critical of some EU policies and decisions. For example, the Slovak government opposes the recent proposals of the European Commission to completely stop the import of energy from Russia. Slovakia is taking decisive steps to diversify its energy resources. The risks of excessive dependence on a single supplier is understood, the Slovak PM said. But the current EU proposal, as per Fico, is short-sighted. He believes that it will undermine their competitiveness and energy security, especially in nuclear energy because there will be no certified alternative fuel for Slovak nuclear reactors in the near future, the Slovak PM said.
