The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has seized 298 kilograms of heroin, whose value on the "black market" is about 85 million laris (approx. US$31,253,800), Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze said at a press conference.

"A Georgian citizen has been arrested on charges of illegal acquisition and storage of drugs in a particularly large amount, as well as illegal import of drugs into Georgia. During the investigation, it was found out that a truck, which, according to customs documents, was loaded with refractory bricks, entered Georgia from the Republic of Armenia through the Guguti customs point and was supposed to leave for Europe via Batumi.

During a thorough inspection of the trailer of the truck at the customs economic zone, law enforcement officers discovered 600 plastic containers resembling bricks. The containers contained 298 kilograms of heroin.

Law enforcement officers are actively continuing the respective complex measures to identify other persons involved in the illegal trafficking of the above-mentioned drugs and bring them to criminal accountability.

The investigation is being conducted under Articles 260 and 262 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The crime provides for up to 20 years of imprisonment, or life imprisonment,” said the deputy minister of internal affairs of Georgia.
