Before striking Iran, the US sent a group of bombers in the opposite direction to the region as a diversion. At the same time, a group of warplanes carrying “bunker buster” bombs flew to Iran with their transponders turned off, reports The New York Times (NYT).

The B-2 strategic bombers are the only military aircraft that can carry the GBU-57 “bunker buster” bombs and remain undetected by Iranian radars, according to the NYT.

To create confusion, US military officials decided to send two groups of B-2s from Missouri at about the same time. One group was to fly west, towards the island of Guam, with transponders turned on, which can be tracked by commercial satellite companies. The other group, comprising fully armed seven bombers and with their transponders off, flew east toward Iran, the NYT reports.

Early Sunday morning, the US Air Force launched a massive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. President Donald Trump said the US military had “destroyed” Iran’s nuclear facilities. And Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the US will be retaliated against.
