The heavy prison sentences imposed on Abzas Media journalists and staff are a worrying development. The European Union's diplomatic service said in a statement.

"Independent journalism plays a vital role in upholding transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse.

The European Union calls on Azerbaijan to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, uphold its international obligations, and take immediate steps to ensure a safe and enabling environment for all journalists and media workers.

The EU remains committed to continue the dialogue and cooperation on human rights with Azerbaijan," the statement said.

Earlier, the BBC reported that a court in Azerbaijan sentenced journalists who investigated the business of the Aliyev family.

AbzasMedia is known for investigating corruption among officials. Its journalists, for example, found out that behind the construction of a technological “smart village” in Zangilan district is a company that belongs to the brother of the presidential aide.
