A 26-year-old citizen of Azerbaijan has been detained on suspicion of espionage on the Greek island of Crete. The man, who stayed in a hotel in close proximity to the U.S. Air Force and Navy base in Souda Bay, was filming military facilities, Greek TV channel ERTnews reported citing the country's police and intelligence service.

The detainee holds a Polish visa. About five thousand photos and a large number of videos were seized from him, DW reported. Earlier, the man was seen taking pictures of strategically important objects and warships entering and leaving the Gulf of Souda. 

On June 21, a native of Azerbaijan, suspected of planning a terrorist attack on military facilities, was detained in Cyprus. Cypriot media, citing government sources, reported that the detainee had entered the country with a British passport and was acting on the instructions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Cypriot and Greek intelligence services estimate that NATO military bases in the Mediterranean, including two UK military bases in Cyprus and a US base in Souda Bay, could become targets of attacks amid the escalation of the military conflict between Israel and Iran and the US entry into it.
