Shanghai authorities have temporarily evacuated more than 280,000 people to safer places as Typhoon Co-May battered the megalopolis, China Central Television reports.

Shanghai has raised its flood and typhoon response level to the third of four—with level one being the highest.

According to the Shanghai meteorological station, the megalopolis will receive more than 80 mm of rain in one day, and this could lead to flooding in flood-prone areas.

Typhoon Co-May brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Yangtze River Delta region in eastern China, including Shanghai, on the night of Tuesday into Wednesday. Moving northwest through the Shanghai metropolitan area, wind speeds are forecast to reach 28 meters per second.
