US President Donald Trump has informed European leaders of his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future, possibly as early as next week, followed by a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two sources of CNN say.

An EU government source confirmed the content of the conversation, the BBC reports.

But a White House staff member noted that although Trump has announced his intention to meet with Putin as early as next week, holding such a meeting on such a schedule is likely to be difficult, given the planned negotiations and logistical difficulties, CNN reports.

“The Russians expressed their desire to meet with President Trump, and the president is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky. President Trump wants this brutal war to end,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

Earlier Wednesday, a White House official said secondary sanctions against Russia were “still expected to be implemented on Friday.”
