Australia will recognize Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Australia recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to have their own state, the premier said.

Albanese added that Australia was prepared to recognize Palestine on the condition that the Palestinian National Authority fulfills its obligations, including that Hamas should not interfere in the governance of the state.

Also, the Australian PM said that he had spoken with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, and told him about the need for a political, not a military, solution in the Gaza Strip.
