US President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and placed the city’s police department under federal control, launching an unprecedented effort to take charge of the nation’s capital, reports The Wall Street Journal.

“This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capital back,” Trump said during a news conference at the White House.

Also, Trump threatened that if necessary, he would also send active troops there, and may also apply the same measures to other major US cities.

The US president compared the murder rate in Washington, D.C. with other capitals of the world, including Baghdad and Bogota, although he admitted that the level of violence in the US capital has decreased by 35% in the past year, which is the lowest figure in the last 30 years.

Despite this, he stated that Washington, D.C. residents do not feel safe on the streets, and pledged to get rid of the slums.

Also, Trump plans to appeal to Congress with a proposal to cancel cash bail, which, according to him, contributes to the increase in crime. Some US states and Washington, D.C. have already limited or abolished the use of cash bail in an effort to make the country’s criminal justice system fairer.
