In 2022, a Swedish civil servant forgot a folder with documents related to Sweden's NATO membership process in a toilet at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, reports Dagens Nyheter.

The incident occurred after Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's visit to Turkey, where important negotiations on the matter were taking place.

The aforesaid civil servant himself reported the materials left with the security service. The folder contained information about the progress of negotiations with Ankara on the conditions for Sweden's NATO membership.

But according to authorities, these documents found by a cleaner were not classified. However, reporters emphasize that against the backdrop of the extremely closed nature of the NATO  membership talks, the fact of this information leak itself raises questions about the level of security and attention when working with sensitive data.

Sweden officially became a member of NATO on March 7, 2024.
