US President Donald Trump said that what is happening in South Korea resembles “purges or a revolution.” He posted a corresponding message on the social network Truth Social.

“What is happening in South Korea? It looks like purges or a revolution. We cannot allow this and do business there,” the American leader wrote. He also reminded that on Monday he will hold a meeting with the President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae-myung at the White House.

Political instability in the country has escalated after the arrest of former President Yoon Suk-yeol on July 9. His imprisonment is related to the investigation of the events of martial law on December 3, 2024. The defense claims that the arrest was “illegal and unjustified.” Yoon Suk-yeol is accused of forging documents, obstructing the authorities, and attempting to destroy evidence.

Earlier, in January, the former head of state was already in custody on charges of rebellion. He was released in March, but in April, the Constitutional Court removed him from office.

Early presidential elections in the Republic of Korea were held on June 3. Lee Jae-myung, a representative of the opposition Democratic Party “Toburo,” won with 49.4% of the vote.
