A man convicted of killing three people in 1992 will be sentenced to death by lethal injection in Florida on Thursday, marking the 11th execution in the southern US state this year, AFP reports. 

Curtis Windom, 59, was sentenced to death for the murders of his girlfriend Valerie Davis, her mother Mary Lubin, and Johnny Lee, a man who allegedly owed him money from card games.

The execution is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. local time (10 p.m. GMT) at a Florida state prison.

In 2025, there were 29 executions in the United States, the highest number since 2014, when a total of 35 prisoners were sentenced to death. 

Florida carried out the most executions, with 10, followed by South Carolina and Texas, with four each. Twenty-four executions this year were carried out by lethal injection, two by firing squad, and three by nitrogen hypoxia, which involves pumping gaseous nitrogen into a face mask, causing the prisoner to suffocate.

The use of gaseous nitrogen as a method of execution has been condemned by United Nations experts as cruel and inhuman.

The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states, while three others—California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania—have moratoriums in place. President Donald Trump is a supporter of the death penalty and on his first day in office called for its expanded use “for the most heinous crimes.”

Earlier this week, Trump said he would seek the death penalty for murders in Washington as part of the fight against crime in the nation's capital.
