This morning, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom initiated the process under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015) to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran. This was stated in a statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. 

"These European allies – the E3 – have provided clear evidence of Iran's continuing ‘significant non-compliance’ with its nuclear obligations, creating a solid basis for initiating countermeasures. Moreover, the E3 could have initiated countermeasures at any time since 2019, but instead chose to first engage in intensive outreach and engagement to provide Iran with a diplomatic opportunity to abandon its strategy of nuclear escalation. The United States greatly appreciates the leadership of our E3 allies in these efforts. In the coming weeks, we will work with them and other members of the UN Security Council to successfully complete the process of lifting international sanctions and restrictions on Iran, as outlined in Presidential Memorandum 2 on National Security.

At the same time, the United States remains open to direct engagement with Iran to promote a peaceful and lasting resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. Countermeasures do not contradict our sincere commitment to diplomacy, but rather reinforce it. I urge Iranian leaders to take the immediate steps necessary to ensure that their nation never acquires nuclear weapons; to pursue the path of peace; and, more broadly, to promote the prosperity of the Iranian people," Marco Rubio said in a statement.
