There are many ways to destroy a nation, to erase the nation from the Earth, thus destroying the language, culture and history, French senator from the ruling Union for a Popular Movement Jean-Francois Humbert announced during the discussion of the bill criminalizing the denial of genocides including the Armenian genocide by the French Senate. He also added that those who deny the genocide take advantage of the fact the public keeps silence about it.

“In this case silence means support. A sign of supporting genocides,” he concluded.

On his turn Senator of the ruling Union for a Popular Movement, chairperson of the Parliament grouping of friendship with the Caucasus Ambroise Dupont stated that it is not the French senate who is to write history.

“Who does not understand the Armenians who survived a horrific slaughter? But the parliament is not the one to write history. I am glad that we are in good relations with Armenia, but why should not we be in good relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan as well,” the politician announced mentioned that he wants peace for the South Caucasus.

According to Dupont the recognition of the bill might weaken France’s position as a mediator for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabah conflict. He reminded that the presidents of co-chairs of OSCE Minsk Group on Karabaph Nicolas Sarkozy, Barak Obama and Dmitry Medvedev called the sides of the Karabakh conflict to find ways of a peaceful resolution.

“The Armenian Genocide is a difficult question. The adoption of the bill will also cause for Armenia and Turkey to stop moves towards normalizing relations,” the French politician concluded.
