The exclamations of delight over the initialing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the US have been replaced by skeptical assessments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, TASS reports.

Speaking to students and faculty of Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), Lavrov recalled that the agreements on the signing of the peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan were formed from the agreement reached between the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in 2020-2022.

“They [i.e. Armenia and Azerbaijan] decided to sign it on the territory of the United States; this is the sovereign right of our neighbors,” the Russian FM noted. “But it remains to be seen how it [i.e. the agreement] will work, as all the admiring reactions that were heard in the first few days after the meeting in Washington were somehow replaced by skeptical assessments when the document was publicized. And as it turns out, not everything is agreed there.”

According to Lavrov such actions correspond to the genre of foreign policy in which “something positive needs to be done and played out in the information field.”

“I believe that such a method has the right to exist, but if nothing follows from it, then it will simply remain as such an outburst, whereas we are interested in the conclusion of a real peace treaty,” added the Russian FM.
