The European Union should abandon Russian oil and gas and instead purchase liquefied natural gas, gasoline, and other fossil fuels from the United States, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told the Financial Times.
According to Wright, this would be economically beneficial for Europe. Wright added that Europe's cessation of Russian fuel purchases would reduce funding for Russia's military machine and thus bring the war closer to an end.
In 2024, Russian gas accounted for up to 14% of fossil fuel imports to the European Union. At the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, it accounted for about 2/5 of all supplies, the Financial Times notes.
Brussels intends to abandon Russian oil and gas by 2028, but Hungary and Slovakia, which receive Russian gas, oppose this plan, the BBC writes.
