Romania on Sunday strongly condemned the entry of a Russian drone into its airspace during an attack on neighboring Ukraine, AFP reports. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador to Bucharest, Vladimir Lipaev, over the incident.

The incursion comes days after fellow NATO member Poland said it had shot down Russian drones which had violated its airspace as Moscow launched a barrage against Ukraine. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said the Russian ambassador would be summoned over Saturday's drone incident to the ministry. After the meeting on Sunday evening, the ministry said in a statement that Romania had "conveyed its strong protest against this unacceptable and irresponsible act, which constitutes a violation of (its) sovereignty".

In response, Russia’s ambassador to Romania, Vladimir Lipaev, rejected the complaint submitted to him regarding the alleged incursion of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace, describing the incident as “another provocation by the Kiev regime,” TASS reports. According to the ambassador, during the meeting at the Romanian foreign ministry, “no clear and convincing answer was given” regarding the identification of the alleged intruding device.

“Since there was no objective confirmation of the device’s ownership, the complaint was rejected as unfounded and fabricated. All the facts indicate that this is another provocation by the Kiev regime, which, fearing inevitable military defeat and accountability for the crimes committed against the Russian and Ukrainian peoples, is attempting by any means to engage other countries in a dangerous military adventure against Russia," noted the Russian ambassador to Romania.
