The Syrian Ministry of Education has announced changes to the curriculum for the 2025/2026 academic year, removing all references to the country's ousted president, Bashar al-Assad, and his symbols, Al Arabiya reports. 

The ministry's directive requires the removal of materials related to Assad from social studies, Islamic education, history, and geography. It is also based on a January decision that permanently abolished the subject of “national education.”

These steps are part of a wide-ranging series of amendments aimed at eliminating the Ba'ath Party and the former regime in Syria.

According to the ministry, the credits previously allocated to national education have been divided equally between history and geography, and their number has been reduced at the secondary school level. This move is part of what officials have called “a broad-based review aimed at eliminating the influence of the Ba'ath Party and its former regime in Syria's education system.”
