Armenia's current actions do not contradict its commitments to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Mikael Agasandyan, Director of the First Department for CIS Countries at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told TASS, the latter reports.
He noted that so far, Armenia's statements about its intention to join the European Union are only "political statements."
"In addition, it has been repeatedly emphasized, including by [Russian Deputy Prime Minister] Alexey Logvinovich Overchuk, that being a member of two unions at the same time is impossible due to their nature," Agasandyan noted. "Currently, Armenia's actions do not contradict its commitments to the EAEU. We will move forward based on practical steps. No one forbids Armenia from cooperating with other countries; all EAEU members do this. The main thing is that such interaction does not contradict the obligations assumed within the framework of the Union; that is not there yet.”
According to the diplomat, the nature of Armenia’s participation in the EAEU has not changed and remains constructive, and the country “is actively working in the EAEU and sees the benefits of its participation in it.”
“Yes. Trade has decreased, but this is an unstable situation,” Agasandyan drew attention. “Earlier there was growth, now everything is returning to a more ordinary course. If we look at the dynamics of past years, then after Armenia’s accession to the EAEU in 2015, its trade with partners has increased sharply.”
Commenting on the expected changes in trade between the EAEU countries, the Russian MFA official emphasized that the statistics “generally show positive dynamics” because the EAEU partners “occupy dominant positions” in mutual trade.
"Of course, there are factors that influence both the increase and the decrease. But overall, the dynamics are positive, the cooperation is mutually beneficial for all [EAEU] member states," Agasandyan stressed.
