BERLIN. – Sharp freezing of the relations between Turkey and France is a huge problem for Ankara and less for Paris, as Turkey has not yet yielded the wish to become EU state, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports.

“The Turkish PM Erdogan called the adopted bill on criminalizing denial of genocides, including the Armenian Genocide, as one ‘without having legal power.’ After all the non-serious statements by Turkey, this one proved weakening of the tension. It is possible that the Turkish businessmen made their own government understood that they have no intentions to willingly reject their prosperous business with France,” the source reports. 

According to the source, the political atmosphere is still cold between Paris and Ankara. It is a huge problem for Turkey and less for Paris, as the Turkey has not rejected the wish to join the EU. While, Erdogan’s threats and rejection of the French President Nikolas Sarkozy’s visits with or without purpose will hardly contribute to the achievement of the goal. Moreover, France was very skeptical to Turkey’s membership in the EU before as well.

“Ankara stresses that historians should deal with history and not MPs. If so, then the Turkish politicians also should leave the history to the historians and not make a state scandal of it. Ankara willingly ignores the true motives of its anger. Turkey fears from damage compensation demands, which can come forward as soon as it recognizes that the mass killings of the 1915-1916 in the Ottoman Empire were genocide. Whereas, the best way to escape it, is building relations with its neighbor Armenia on a new level,” Deutsche Welle reports.
