The Russian side is optimistic ahead of the meeting between the presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev; the presidents will be able to discuss all the issues that have accumulated in their relations, Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters Thursday, TASS reports.

“We are now discussing President Putin’s upcoming state visit to Tajikistan. We have a very extensive agenda. Naturally, Russian-Azerbaijani relations are also being discussed separately,” Peskov said.

“An agreement has been reached for the two presidents to meet today. We’ll see what the outcome will be. We are optimistic in this regard. We hope that the [two] presidents will discuss the current state of our bilateral relations and address all remaining issues,” the Kremlin spokesperson added.

He noted that the telephone conversation between Putin and Aliyev on Tuesday was “good, positive, and constructive,” and that during the call, an agreement was reached regarding the upcoming meeting.

Aliyev had called Putin on his birthday to congratulate the Russian leader. That conversation became their first contact after more than six months without personal communication.
