After the Russian strikes on energy infrastructure facilities in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions on October 3, Ukraine lost more than 60 percent of its natural gas production capacity and, as a result, will have to spend about 1.9 billion euros on fuel imports to get through the coming winter, sources told Bloomberg.

According to this news agency, if attacks on energy infrastructure continue, Ukraine will have to purchase approximately 4.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas by the end of March 2026. This amount is equivalent to 20 percent of the country’s annual energy consumption.

Ukraine has already purchased around 4.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas from foreign suppliers this year, Bloomberg adds. Kyiv estimates that by the end of this year, the country will need 5.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas, although this figure may increase depending on several factors—particularly, how quickly Ukraine can restore its energy infrastructure.
