The US Senate has failed for the ninth time to reach an agreement on federal government funding. The US government shutdown has now continued for more than two weeks.

The Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the bureaucratic apparatus have faced opposition from the judiciary. On Wednesday, US District Judge Susan Illston in California ordered the White House to halt mass layoffs during the shutdown while she reviews union complaints alleging that the dismissal of public employees during a government work stoppage is illegal.
