Rheinmetall and defense concern KNDS will supply the armed forces of Germany and the Netherlands with 222 “Schakal” infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) under a contract worth €3.4 billion, the companies’ press office reported.

The direct contractor will be Artec GmbH, the joint venture of Rheinmetall and KNDS. The Schakal IFV pairs the Boxer armored personnel carrier chassis with the combat turret of the Puma IFV. According to the statement, 150 Schakal vehicles will be delivered to the Bundeswehr, and 72 vehicles to the Royal Netherlands Army.

The agreement between Artec GmbH and the joint procurement organization OCCAR, which acts on behalf of the two countries’ armed forces, also includes an option for an additional 248 IFVs. Under the contract, most of the work will be carried out by Rheinmetall, which will receive roughly €3 billion of the total order value.

The Schakal IFVs are set to become a principal combat vehicle for Germany’s land forces.
