A cluster munition from unexploded ordnance fell from a military helicopter flying over the village of Peyia in Cyprus, reports Alpha TV.

According to the report, the munition likely detached from its holder on an Airbus H145M light multi-role helicopter, which was conducting a training flight during exercises on the island. The cluster munition fell in an open field within the residential area of Peyia, in Paphos District.

Police immediately arrived at the scene. There were concerns that the incident could have caused casualties, but fortunately, no residents were harmed. Cypriot authorities are now investigating the cause of this unusual incident.

Local media note that Airbus H145M helicopters in Cyprus are equipped with 70 mm laser-guided rockets and Israeli SPIKE ER2 anti-tank missiles. As part of the replacement of the fleet of 11 Russian-made Mi-35 attack helicopters, the Republic of Cyprus reached an agreement with Airbus to acquire 12 H145M helicopters. Six of these have already been delivered to the Air Component of the Cyprus National Guard.
