Argentina’s Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein has resigned after criticizing the organization of the meeting between President Javier Milei and his American counterpart Donald Trump, La Nación reported.

According to the newspaper, Werthein informed Milei of his decision. The resignation has not yet been officially announced.

Sources from the Foreign Ministry indicated that the minister was frustrated with criticism on social media directed at Santiago Caputo, Milei’s advisor responsible for the president’s media strategy. Werthein was blamed for the market’s negative reaction to Milei and Trump’s meeting in Washington on October 14.

During the meeting at the White House, Trump stated that U.S. support for Argentina would depend on the election results and that if “Milei loses, [the U.S. authorities] would not be generous toward Argentina.” However, no announcement was made regarding the anticipated trade agreement in Washington. Following the meeting, Argentine company stock prices declined.
