Spain will fund the purchase of American weapons to be transferred to Ukraine, reports El País.

According to the newspaper, after some initial hesitation, Madrid has decided to join the PURL initiative, under which NATO allies buy weapons from U.S. stockpiles for Kyiv. Under an agreement signed in 2024, Spain already provides Ukraine with €1 billion worth of domestically produced arms annually.

The newspaper notes that the EU is seeking ways to support Kyiv amid serious economic challenges. Sources indicate that the exact amount Spain will pay for the U.S. military equipment has not yet been determined. Purchasing American military hardware could also help ease tensions between Madrid and Washington, which had arisen over NATO defense spending disagreements.

On October 15, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles did not rule out the country joining PURL.

The initiative was launched on July 14 by U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. On September 17, NATO representative Patrick Turner stated in Kyiv that deliveries of U.S.-provided weapons to Ukraine are continuing.
