President of the South American republic Gustavo Petro has stated that there are Colombian citizens involved in illicit drug trafficking who live in the United States and use their connections with U.S. President Donald Trump to distribute drugs.

“Colombian ultra-rightists live in Miami, engage in drug sales, carry out lobbying activities, and have a specific goal. That goal is to use [Donald] Trump and his friendship,” he said at a press conference broadcast on the local channel Noticias Caracol.

Asked by a journalist how the head of state could comment on possible U.S. intervention in Colombia’s internal affairs under the pretext of combating international drug trafficking, Petro reiterated that those involved in the drug trade live in the United States, mainly in Miami and New York. “They are also in Dubai, living in Rome, Madrid, and other cities,” he emphasized.

Earlier, Trump said that Colombia and Mexico have effectively fallen under the control of drug cartels. At the same time, the leaders of Colombia and the U.S. have clashed several times. In an interview with Univisión, Petro said the world should either change Trump or “get rid of him.” Commenting on these remarks, Trump called his Colombian counterpart a “thug and a bad person” and urged him to mind his words, warning that otherwise he would take “serious measures” against him and his country.
