More than 120 people have died from floods in Niger this year, and around 550,000 have been affected, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.

OCHA described the current floods as deadly, noting that, according to official data, “over 120 people have died, nearly 55,000 homes have been destroyed, and more than 10,000 acres of farmland have been submerged.” The floods “have affected approximately 550,000 people this year, with the hardest-hit regions being Dosso, Tillaberi, and Maradi.”

The UN and its humanitarian partners are supporting the Nigerien government in its relief efforts, but “resources remain extremely limited.” OCHA also reminded that the flood response plan in Niger “has been funded at less than one-fifth this year: $111 million received out of the required $603 million.”
